Description: “Education is not an affair of 'telling' and being told, but an active and constructive process.” ( John Dewey ) :- On 28th October 2022 the staff of Junior Wing, St. Columba's School attended a workshop on the theory and practice of Experiential Learning. It was re-iterated that Experiential learning is a ‘minds on’ learning process whereby students “learn by doing” and by reflecting and applying the experience to daily life. Well-planned, supervised, and assessed experiential learning programmes can stimulate academic inquiry by promoting interdisciplinary learning, civic engagement, cultural awareness, leadership, and other professional and intellectual skills of using teaching aids and getting the whole class involved in the learning process. The workshop was conducted by Mrs.A.Sharma who showed through practical examples and activities that -learning that is considered “experiential” contain all the following elements: reflection, critical analysis, and synthesis (creativity). Opportunities for students to engage intellectually, creatively, emotionally, socially, or physically are pertinent to the learning process. Mrs. Sharma further explained through Kolb’s cycle of learning that the stages of experiential learning process. She emphasized on children using their own thinking strategies while doing different activities. Throughout the session, Mrs. Sharma gave insights to the teachers to plan to teach various concepts with strategic questioning and hands-on experience with real-life situations. In the end, she conducted a demonstration session using 'Kolb’s cycle of Experiential learning ' and 'Life skills application'. She stressed on involving students to create their own stories and improve their speaking skills. The teachers also got an opportunity to present the activities to be used and implemented as Experiential learning in the classroom setting. Mrs. Kaushal elaborated on how teachers must use their creativity to plan a variety of teaching experiences to help the students understand, apply and be creative. The session was highly interactive and informative for the teachers. - BY MRS ANJALI SHARMA
