“Diversity
is having a seat at the table, inclusion is having a voice, and belonging is
having that voice be heard.”
The
Junior Wing of St. Columba’s School observed World Autism Awareness Day on 10th
April 2026 with a profound message: “Different Notes, One Symphony.” The
initiative aimed to foster empathy and celebrate the diverse strengths and
talents of children on the autism spectrum. By reinforcing the belief that
every child learns in their own unique way, the school community reaffirmed its
commitment to creating an inclusive environment where every individual feels
valued.
The
awareness drive was marked by age-appropriate and engaging activities across
the grades. Class 1 participated in a speaking activity titled “What Makes Me
Special,” helping students recognise and take pride in their individual
identities. Class 2 engaged in “My Friend is a Superhero,” where students
designed creative badges to celebrate the unique qualities and “superpowers” of
their peers. Class 3 conducted the “Kindness Jar” activity, writing heartfelt
notes on heart-shaped cut-outs and sharing thoughtful ways to include and
support others.
Beyond
the classroom, an Awareness Workshop was conducted for teachers by the Special
Educators to sensitise the staff about the causes, common signs, and practical
classroom strategies for supporting neurodivergent learners. In a unified show
of solidarity, the staff wore blue to mark the occasion and spread the message
of acceptance and understanding.
The
initiative proved to be a meaningful learning experience. Students discovered
that small acts of kindness, patience, and support can greatly strengthen a
peer’s sense of belonging. By celebrating individuality and practising empathy,
the Junior Wing turned awareness into action, reaffirming its commitment to
nurturing a welcoming and inclusive environment for every child.
