Description:

Session on Safeguarding Children

Held on 26th March, 2025 | Middle School Auditorium, St. Columba’s School

An orientation session on Safeguarding Children was conducted for the Middle School staff of St. Columba’s School on 26th March, 2025, prior to the commencement of the new academic session. The session was led by the Protection Officer, Mrs. Sisha J. Lawrence, and was titled “Safeguarding Everyone”.

The orientation aimed to reinforce the staff’s awareness of their responsibilities in ensuring the safety, protection, and well-being of all students. The session highlighted the importance of identifying early signs of distress or abuse and responding with care, professionalism, and urgency.

Staff members were briefed on relevant legal frameworks, including the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, 2012, both of which provide vital guidelines for safeguarding children from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Key areas of concern discussed included various forms of abuse, bullying and body shaming, cybercrime, addiction, mental health issues.

The session provided practical guidance on how to respond when a child discloses abuse. Teachers were advised to listen without judgment, avoid promising confidentiality, and immediately report concerns to the designated Protection Officer. A case study was presented to help staff reflect on the behavioural indicators of abuse and understand the correct reporting procedure.

Staff were also introduced to the format for reporting child abuse, which includes essential details such as the date, nature of the incident, individuals involved, and whether it occurred during or outside school hours.

The session concluded with general reminders on maintaining professional boundaries, promoting a culture of respect and empathy, and exercising caution in digital interactions. Emphasis was placed on upholding the highest standards of conduct, both within and beyond the school premises.
