Description:
The Just-Ed Society of the Senior School conducted a powerful assembly on 17th July 2025 to commemorate International Nelson Mandela Day, shedding light on the often overlooked issue of casual discrimination. The assembly opened with a bold dramatization of offensive slurs, revealing how prejudice is frequently disguised as humour. This impactful presentation served as a wake-up call, highlighting how such language—now increasingly normalized—stands in stark contrast to the values of respect and unity that define our school.
Through reflections on Nelson Mandela’s life and legacy, speakers encouraged students to confront everyday biases and actively cultivate a culture of inclusion. Mandela’s message of justice, empathy, and courage was vividly brought to life through thoughtful speeches, a moving Hindi poem titled Samaveshan ki Oar, and a heartfelt musical performance of Heal the World.
The assembly also marked the launch of the not.JUST.a.JOKE campaign—a student-led initiative aimed at challenging bullying disguised as banter. This campaign is supported by anonymous reporting tools and upcoming workshops focused on empathy and accountability.
The assembly concluded with a solemn reminder: real justice begins not in law books, but in our daily interactions with one another. As a tribute to Mandela’s enduring ideals, the assembly called upon every Columban to stand not only against injustice but also for dignity, inclusion, and kindness.
